Just 75 miles west of Austin lies the town of Fredericksburg, Texas. Founded in 1846 by German settlers, it is still vibrant with the traditions of those who first called it home. If you're itching for the perfect trip to central Texas, this is where you need to go. With something for everyone — from hiking and climbing to great food and antique shopping, you'll head home happy.

We started the day at Enchanted Rock State Natural Area, which consists of a massive granite dome rising 425 feet above the surrounding land. There is evidence that shows humans lived in the area some 10,000 years ago. Although the hike can be a bit strenuous at times, the 360-degree view from the top is simply breathtaking. If you are one for exploring, there are several caves created by giant boulders at the summit.

After some morning adventure on our way into town, we stopped at Silver Creek Beer Garden & Grille for some much-needed nourishment. We went with a traditional German sausage plate and a side of red cabbage and sauerkraut while sitting outside on the patio listening to live music. If you're looking to indulge in some authentic German cuisine, other options on Main Street, include Der Lindenbaum, Ausländer and Rathskeller.

After lunch we decided to grab a little dessert at the Lone Star Candy Bar. This quaint little shop is heaven on earth for those with a big sweet tooth. Inside you will find everything from truffles to 36 flavors of homemade fudge. As we meandered on down Main Street, we also stopped in a few antique and gift shops. Carol Hicks Bolton Antiquities turned out to be our favorite. Housed in what used to be a cattle feed warehouse, the antiques inside the 14,000-square-foot building make up a carefully curated collection of vintage furniture, ceramics, decorations and more.

Laced with German heritage and plenty of outdoor seating, we found ourselves at the Altdorf Biergarten next — the perfect place for an afternoon recess. Our premium German beers added to the enjoyment of the already relaxing atmosphere.

Explore the Pioneer Museum

Located right down the street from Altdorf Biergarten is perhaps one of the most historical museums in the Texas Hill Country. The Pioneer Museum houses replicas of structures, photographs and authentic objects ancestors once called their own. Full of history and pride, this museum is a must-see in town.

After a day full of wonderful places, all that was left before hitting the road for home in Austin was a quick stop for coffee. Greater Grace Coffee House has not only great coffee, but a huge seating deck and a very kind staff. Before leaving, the barista Andy showed us around their orchard and chicken coop on the property. It was flocking with Cotton Patch geese. Here, we also found Black Bear, a darling bed-and-breakfast should you want to stay the weekend!

Fueled from the coffee and all we had experienced within just a few short hours, we hit the road for home. Austin has a lot to offer, but it’s always good to get out and experience what lies just beyond your city.
