Driving in Taiwan: What to Know Before You Go

Before setting off on your journey, familiarize yourself with the rules of the road. 

  • Drive on the Right. Vehicles drive on the right-hand side of the road. 
  • Watch for Scooters. Scooters and motorbikes are common throughout Taiwan, especially in urban areas and at intersections.
  • Know the Tolls. Most highways use an electronic toll system for convenient travel.
  • Yield to Pedestrians. Drivers must yield to pedestrians at marked crosswalks.
  • Buckle Up. Seat belts are required for all passengers.

Delayed flight arrivals are accommodated until the end of the business day. Taoyuan Airport operating hours are 08:30–19:30 (8:30am - 7:30pm) daily.

Step 1: Ensure Safety First

  • Stop the vehicle immediately and turn on hazard lights.
  • Place a warning sign (reflective triangle) behind the vehicle if it is safe to do so.
  • Move all passengers to a safe location away from traffic.

 

Step 2: Contact Emergency Services

  • Call 110 to report the accident to the police.
  • Call 119 for an ambulance if anyone is injured.
  • Obtain an official police report. Police reporting is required for claim processing.

 

Step 3: Preserve the Accident Scene

  • Do not move the vehicle unless required for safety reasons.
  • Take photos of:
    • Vehicle damage
    • Overall accident scene
    • Road conditions and skid marks
    • Other vehicles involved
  • Ensure dashcam footage is being recorded and saved.

 

Step 4: Contact Customer Service

  • Call +886-2-5589-0808 and press 5 for assistance.
  • Follow all instructions provided by customer service.
  • Do not negotiate settlements or make private agreements with the other party.

 

Step 5: Obtain Required Documentation

  • Request a Road Traffic Accident Statement/Registration Form (道路交通事故當事人登記聯單) from the police officer.
  • Keep the document for insurance and claim purposes.

To maintain eligibility for CDW/Zero Excess protection, customers must:

  • Report the accident to the police
  • Contact customer service immediately
  • Cooperate with police procedures
  • Obtain the required accident documentation
  • Retain photos, dashcam footage, and supporting evidence

Failure to complete these steps may affect claim eligibility and could result in additional charges.

 


 

Car Rental Information

For rentals over 30 days, you'll need a passport, an IDP with visa endorsement or a Taiwan driver's license, and a credit card valid for at least six months.

After arrival, a shuttle service will take you from the airport to the rental location. At the end of your rental, return the vehicle to the rental office for inspection before taking the shuttle back to the airport terminal.
