Further enhancements were carried out on the cathedral in the 1930s. The Grand Ducal Palace is a magnificent building, still used by the Grand Duke for state occasions. Metz is another fortified place where the legacy left by its military history can still be seen today in the remains of its defensive walls; a 13th-century bridge castle and buildings that were once barracks that have been regenerated as residential accommodation. Metz has innumerable churches, not least the cathedral of St Stephen. It also has a branch of the Pompidou Centre, displaying modern art.
