Things to do in Mesa

Mesa combines desert parks, spring training baseball, arts districts, and outdoor recreation across the eastern side of the Phoenix metro area. Visitors can explore museums and local entertainment areas before heading toward hiking trails, mountain scenery, and recreation spots throughout the East Valley.

Mesa Arts Center anchors downtown Mesa with theaters, galleries, public art, and performance spaces spread across a large modern campus. The venue hosts concerts, comedy shows, touring productions, and community events throughout the year. Restaurants and bars nearby keep the downtown district active before and after performances.

Usery Mountain Regional Park sits east of Mesa and gives visitors access to desert hiking trails, mountain biking routes, and wide views of the East Valley. The park becomes especially popular during cooler months when temperatures are more comfortable for outdoor activity. Early mornings usually bring the heaviest trail traffic during spring and fall.

Sloan Park hosts Chicago Cubs spring training games each February and March on the western side of Mesa. The surrounding area becomes one of the busiest parts of the city during baseball season as fans move between games, restaurants, and nearby entertainment districts. Parking and traffic increase noticeably on game days.

The Salt River recreation areas northeast of Mesa attract visitors looking for tubing, kayaking, paddleboarding, and wildlife viewing during warmer months. Floating the river becomes especially popular in late spring and summer when temperatures rise across the Valley. Visitors often spot wild horses along portions of the river corridor.

The Superstition Mountains rise east of Mesa and provide some of the region’s best-known desert scenery and hiking areas. Lost Dutchman State Park sits near the base of the mountains with trails leading into rugged desert terrain tied to local mining legends and Arizona history. Sunrise and sunset are especially popular times to visit because of cooler temperatures and mountain views.

Downtown Mesa combines local restaurants, galleries, and performance venues along the Main Street corridor. Public art installations and community events keep the area active throughout the year, especially during cooler seasons. The district has continued to grow as one of the East Valley’s main entertainment areas.

The Arizona Museum of Natural History features exhibits focused on dinosaurs, archaeology, geology, and the history of the Southwest. Visitors can explore recreated landscapes, fossils, and displays tied to early civilizations in the region. The museum sits near downtown Mesa within walking distance of several other attractions.

Mesa Travel Tips

Mesa sits about 15 to 25 miles east of Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport depending on where visitors are staying in the city. Drive times usually range from 20 to 40 minutes under normal traffic conditions. Rush hour traffic around the East Valley can add additional travel time during weekday mornings and evenings.

Traffic is usually heaviest during weekday commuting hours along Loop 101, Loop 202, and US 60. Spring training season, winter tourism months, and large events across the Phoenix area can also increase congestion throughout Mesa and neighboring cities. Friday afternoons often bring slower traffic across much of the Valley.

Downtown Mesa offers a growing mix of restaurants, breweries, bars, and arts venues around Main Street. The Riverview area near Sloan Park attracts visitors during spring training season with larger entertainment and shopping districts nearby. Many visitors also drive into neighboring Tempe, Gilbert, or Scottsdale for additional nightlife options.

Mesa borders Tempe on the west side and sits roughly 20 to 30 minutes from most parts of Scottsdale and downtown Phoenix under normal traffic conditions. Drive times vary widely depending on freeway traffic and the time of day. The East Valley cities connect closely through Loop 101, Loop 202, and other major routes.

These highways serve as the main transportation routes across the East Valley and can become heavily congested during rush hour. Traffic speeds often change quickly around freeway interchanges and construction zones. Visitors driving between spring training games or major event areas should expect slower traffic during late afternoons and weekends.

Summer temperatures in Mesa regularly exceed 100 degrees between June and September. Visitors should keep water in the vehicle, use sunshades when parked, and avoid leaving electronics or valuables inside hot cars for long periods. Outdoor activities are usually more comfortable during early mornings or after sunset in peak summer months.

Downtown Mesa has a more local and arts-focused atmosphere with independent restaurants, breweries, and performance venues along Main Street. The Riverview area feels more modern and commercial with larger shopping centers, chain restaurants, and easier freeway access near Sloan Park. Many visitors spend time in both parts of the city during the same trip.
