Things to do in Las Vegas

Las Vegas pairs world-famous entertainment with easy access to wide-open desert scenery. Whether you’re staying on the Strip or exploring beyond it, the city delivers plenty of iconic sights and memorable side trips.

The Strip is the heart of the Las Vegas experience, lined with landmark resorts, larger-than-life attractions, and nonstop shows. It’s a great place to wander, take in the neon skyline, and build a night around dining and entertainment.

For classic Vegas energy downtown, head to Fremont Street Experience. The Viva Vision canopy hosts free light shows and is one of the most popular nighttime stops off the Strip.

Just outside the city, Red Rock Canyon is known for dramatic sandstone cliffs, desert trails, and a scenic drive with overlooks. If you’re visiting between October and May, note that timed-entry reservations may be required for access to the Scenic Drive during peak hours.

The Las Vegas Arts District (often called the 18b Arts District) blends murals, galleries, and creative local businesses in a walkable pocket of downtown. It’s a great change of pace when you want something more local than the resort corridor.

Springs Preserve is a quieter side of Las Vegas, featuring museums, botanical gardens, and desert trails across a large outdoor campus. It’s a solid pick for families or anyone who wants a break from the crowds.

Shark Reef Aquarium is an up-close look at marine life, with more than 2,000 animals including sharks, rays, and sea turtles. It’s an easy add-on when you want an indoor attraction on a hot afternoon.

For a family-friendly break from the bigger attractions, Las Vegas Mini Grand Prix offers multiple go-kart tracks plus arcade-style fun. It’s a good option if you’re traveling with kids or just want something playful and low-pressure.

Travel Tips for Driving in Las Vegas

Most city streets are typically posted 25-35 mph, with larger roads often 35-45 mph. Highways like I-15, US-95, and I-215 are commonly 55-65 mph, but limits can change quickly near construction zones and resort corridors. When in doubt, follow posted signs and slow down near the Strip.

Parking depends on where you spend your time. Strip resorts usually have large garages, and parking policies can vary by property and by busy weekends. Downtown and the Arts District offer a mix of meters, lots, and garages, with posted time limits in many areas. If you are visiting the Strip for a few hours, it is often easiest to park once and walk.

Try to avoid the busiest windows, especially weekday late afternoons (around 4–7 p.m.) and peak Strip traffic after major events and showtimes. Late mornings and early afternoons are usually calmer for getting across town.

Downtown is a straightforward drive from Harry Reid International Airport (LAS). In light traffic, many routes take I-15 north and connect toward downtown via US-95, depending on your destination. Your GPS will usually choose the quickest option based on current traffic.

No. Las Vegas does not have toll roads, so you will not encounter toll charges for normal driving around the city.

Las Vegas heat can be intense, especially in summer. Keep water in the car, use sunscreen if you will be outside, and plan short breaks if you are doing multiple stops in a row. Never leave kids or pets in a parked vehicle, even for a quick errand.

Expect heavy foot traffic day and night near the Strip, Fremont Street, and major resorts. Drive slowly in busy areas, watch for crosswalk signals, and be extra careful when turning at intersections where crowds can step out quickly.
