Things to do in Palm Springs

Palm Springs combines desert scenery, resort culture, midcentury architecture, and outdoor recreation across the Coachella Valley. Visitors can explore downtown shopping districts and cultural attractions before heading toward hiking trails, mountain viewpoints, and event weekends throughout the desert region.

The Palm Springs Aerial Tramway carries visitors from the desert floor into the San Jacinto Mountains above the city. Temperatures at the top are often much cooler than downtown Palm Springs, especially during summer months. Visitors use the mountain station for hiking, scenic overlooks, dining, and access to alpine forest trails above the desert landscape.

Palm Canyon Drive runs through the center of downtown Palm Springs with restaurants, boutiques, hotels, patios, and entertainment venues spread across several walkable blocks. The area stays active throughout the day and evening, especially during winter tourism season and major festival weekends. Public art, vintage hotels, and mountain views help define much of the downtown atmosphere.

The Indian Canyons area south of downtown includes hiking trails, palm groves, desert rock formations, and streams running through the Agua Caliente tribal lands. Visitors often explore the canyon system during cooler morning hours because temperatures rise quickly later in the day. Several trails range from short walks to longer hikes deeper into the canyon landscape.

Palm Springs is known for midcentury modern homes, hotels, and commercial buildings designed during the city’s postwar resort boom. Guided architecture tours and self-guided driving routes take visitors through neighborhoods filled with preserved homes and retro design landmarks. Modernism Week each year brings especially large crowds interested in architecture and design culture.

The Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival takes place east of Palm Springs in nearby Indio and draws large crowds from around the world each spring. Festival weekends increase traffic, hotel demand, and activity across much of the Coachella Valley. Restaurants, nightlife areas, and resort properties throughout Palm Springs stay especially busy during the event period.

Palm Springs has long been known for resort hotels, pool culture, and spa properties spread throughout the desert landscape. Many visitors spend afternoons relaxing at resort pools before heading downtown during cooler evening hours. Winter and spring are typically the busiest seasons for resort travel across the city.

The Agua Caliente Cultural Museum highlights the history, culture, and traditions of the Agua Caliente Band of Cahuilla Indians. Exhibits focus on Indigenous history in the Coachella Valley along with contemporary artwork and cultural preservation efforts. The museum sits near downtown Palm Springs within walking distance of restaurants and shopping areas.

Palm Springs Travel Tips

Palm Springs International Airport sits just east of downtown and serves as the city’s main airport. Most visitors can reach downtown hotels and resort areas within about 10 to 15 minutes after landing. The airport becomes noticeably busier during winter tourism season and major festival weekends.

Palm Springs sees its largest crowds between late fall and spring when cooler temperatures attract visitors escaping colder climates elsewhere. Coachella, Stagecoach, tennis tournaments, and Modernism Week also bring major spikes in tourism throughout the year. Summer months are much quieter because of extreme daytime heat.

Downtown Palm Springs along Palm Canyon Drive has the city’s largest concentration of restaurants, bars, lounges, and nightlife venues. Nearby resort districts and boutique hotels also host popular dining and poolside gathering spots throughout the city. Evening activity increases significantly during festival weekends and peak winter travel season.

Summer temperatures regularly climb above 100 degrees in Palm Springs, especially between June and September. Visitors should carry water, avoid leaving electronics or valuables inside parked vehicles, and expect steering wheels and pavement to become extremely hot during afternoon hours. Outdoor activities are usually more comfortable early in the morning or after sunset.

Joshua Tree National Park sits about an hour from Palm Springs depending on the entrance used and traffic conditions. Fuel, water, and shade become much more limited once visitors enter the park, especially during hotter months. Cell service can also become unreliable in some desert areas, so planning ahead is important before longer drives.

Downtown Palm Springs has a more walkable and nightlife-focused atmosphere with boutique hotels, restaurants, and entertainment concentrated along Palm Canyon Drive. Palm Desert offers larger shopping centers, golf resorts, and newer commercial districts farther east in the valley. Many visitors spend time in both areas during the same trip.
