Things to do in San Diego

San Diego brings together waterfront museums, historic downtown blocks, major cultural attractions, and coastal scenery across one metro area. Visitors can spend time in urban districts, oceanfront neighborhoods, and large public landmarks without going far from the city core.

Balboa Park is one of San Diego’s defining attractions, covering more than 1,000 acres near downtown and bringing together museums, gardens, cultural institutions, and the San Diego Zoo. The park is also known for its Spanish Colonial Revival architecture, broad plazas, walking paths, and year-round mix of exhibits and performances.

La Jolla Cove is one of San Diego’s best-known coastal spots, set below sandstone cliffs in the La Jolla shoreline area. Its protected waters make it a major place for snorkeling, swimming, kayaking, and wildlife viewing, with sea lions and seals often seen along the nearby coastline.

The Gaslamp Quarter is the heart of downtown San Diego’s historic entertainment district, known for its Victorian-era buildings, restaurants, nightlife, and events. The district covers 16 walkable blocks and remains one of the city’s busiest areas for dining, live entertainment, shopping, and pregame activity near Petco Park.

The USS Midway Museum sits along the San Diego waterfront inside a former aircraft carrier that now serves as one of the city’s best-known museums. Visitors can explore the flight deck, hangar deck, and below-deck spaces while viewing restored aircraft, interactive exhibits, and self-guided audio tours across the ship.

Birch Aquarium in La Jolla connects visitors to marine life and ocean science through exhibits tied to Scripps Institution of Oceanography at UC San Diego. The aquarium showcases marine animals, hands-on learning, and coastal views above the Pacific, giving the site both a science focus and a strong oceanfront setting.

Cabrillo National Monument sits at the southern tip of Point Loma and marks the place where Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo came ashore in 1542. The monument combines history and scenery with tidepools, the Old Point Loma Lighthouse, walking trails, military history exhibits, and wide views over San Diego Bay and the Pacific.

San Diego Travel Tips

San Diego manages about 5,300 metered spaces, and rates, time limits, and hours of operation vary by area. Most meters are enforced Monday through Saturday from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m., but downtown’s Hospitality Zone runs later, so check the posted sign every time.

Special event parking rules apply within a half mile of Petco Park, so parking that looks normal earlier in the day may work differently during games or large events. That makes downtown one of the places where reading the meter and nearby signs matters more than assuming a standard rule.

Yes. San Diego’s municipal code requires drivers parking on grades above 3 percent to turn the front wheels against the curb so the car will not roll if it moves. Another easy one to miss is that vehicles cannot be backed into the curb in the Central Traffic District between 10 a.m. and 6 p.m.

es, but they are limited compared with some other Southern California counties. SANDAG operates tolling for the I-15 Express Lanes and the SR 125 Toll Road, and all drivers on SR 125 are required to pay a toll.

SR 125 is a 10-mile toll road between SR 54 in Spring Valley and SR 905 in Otay Mesa. FasTrak users get the best rate, while people who pay later or at the toll booths pay more, so it helps to know in advance whether your route will put you on that road.

The airport opened a new signal-free entrance roadway in August 2025 that begins on North Harbor Drive just west of West Laurel Street and provides direct access to Terminals 1 and 2. If you miss that entrance, Terminal 1 can still be reached via Harbor Island Drive and Terminal 2 via Spanish Landing.

It can. The National Weather Service regularly notes patchy fog in San Diego County’s coastal areas, with local visibility dropping to one quarter mile or less at times. That tends to matter most near the shoreline and during morning hours, when the marine layer is most likely to slow visibility.
