Things to do in Atlanta

Atlanta covers a wide, multi‑corridor region, and its major attractions are spread across districts like Downtown, Midtown, Buckhead, and the BeltLine. Renting a car makes exploring these areas far easier because many top landmarks sit well beyond convenient transit routes. With your own vehicle, you can visit multiple neighborhoods in a single day, avoid long transfers, and travel between parks, museums, shopping districts, and entertainment areas on your schedule.

The Georgia Aquarium anchors a lively section of downtown where families, travelers, and event goers all cross paths. Centennial Olympic Park surrounds it with fountains, walking paths, and views of the skyline. With your own rental car, it is easy to pair a visit here with nearby attractions like the World of Coca Cola or the National Center for Civil and Human Rights and move between districts without relying on transfers.

Piedmont Park feels like Atlanta’s backyard, with open lawns, shaded walking paths, and skyline views from the edges of the lake. Just next door, Midtown is packed with galleries, restaurants, and theaters that give the area its creative personality. A car lets you explore the park, visit the Atlanta Botanical Garden, and drift into neighboring districts throughout the day.

Located along Auburn Avenue, this landmark district includes Dr. King’s birth home, Ebenezer Baptist Church, and the King Center. Walking the area offers a powerful sense of history, and having a rental car allows you to connect your visit with other civil rights sites or continue to nearby neighborhoods that tell different chapters of the city’s story.

In the heart of Buckhead, the Atlanta History Center brings together exhibits, gardens, and historic homes across a spacious campus. The larger district blends upscale shopping areas with quiet pockets of residential streets and long running restaurants. Driving makes it simple to explore multiple stops without needing to cross long stretches on foot.

Zoo Atlanta sits within one of the city’s oldest neighborhoods, surrounded by historic homes and leafy streets. Grant Park offers room to explore before or after your visit, and having a car gives you the flexibility to continue your day across other parts of the city, including markets, dining areas, or additional cultural sites.

The Battery Atlanta brings together dining, shops, music venues, and open-air gathering spots right next to Truist Park. The whole district stays lively whether the Braves are playing or not, with plazas, restaurants, and entertainment that draw visitors throughout the year. You can stroll between boutiques, grab a meal, catch live music at the Coca-Cola Roxy, or simply take in the atmosphere of one of the city’s most energetic mixed-use areas. At roughly twelve miles from downtown, having a rental car makes getting here simple and gives you flexibility on game days, concert nights, or whenever you want to explore this bustling corner of the metro.

Travel Tips for Driving in Atlanta

Atlanta’s Vision Zero ordinance set a 25-mph default limit on many city streets. Georgia’s statewide rules set 30 mph as the standard limit in urban and residential districts, with higher limits on multilane highways and interstates. Local governments may adjust limits through engineering studies but cannot post urban district speeds below 25 mph.

Parking rules vary by zone. Business and government districts typically enforce meters Monday through Saturday from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., while entertainment and restaurant zones extend enforcement until 10 p.m. Meter fees follow a standard rate of $1 per half hour, with posted limits ranging from 1 to 4 hours. Sundays and city holidays are usually enforcement free unless posted for events.

Traffic is heaviest between 6:30 and 9:30 a.m. and 4:00 to 7:00 p.m., affecting the Downtown Connector, GA 400, and I 285. The worst congestion usually hits between 4 and 5 p.m., and Thursdays tend to be the most delayed weekday. Travel is smoother mid-morning or early afternoon, especially between 9:45 and 11:00 a.m. or 1:00 and 3:30 p.m.

Hartsfield Jackson Airport is around 10 to 12 miles from downtown. Typical drive times are 15 to 20 minutes, while rush hour may extend the trip to 25 to 40 minutes. Taxis and rideshares under lighter traffic conditions often complete the trip in about 15 minutes.

Georgia does not operate traditional toll roads but uses Express Lanes that require a Peach Pass. Vehicles without a transponder receive violations and mailed fees. Dynamic pricing adjusts rates based on traffic, with common charges starting around 50 cents and increasing during peak periods. Facilities include I 85, the I 85 Extension, I 75 South Metro, and the Northwest Corridor reversible lanes.

Major events at Mercedes Benz Stadium, Truist Park, and State Farm Arena produce significant congestion. MARTA often increases rail frequency during peak events, and officials recommend rail travel to avoid closures and bottlenecks. Parking near venues is limited and demand spikes quickly, so early arrival or parking away from venues can improve travel times.

Downtown Atlanta has many one‑way blocks that can surprise visitors, especially around Peachtree Center and the hotel corridor. A rental car gives you room to make quick adjustments, but it helps to slow your pace, watch signs closely, and use your GPS for lane guidance when streets start to shift direction from block to block.

Interchanges like the Downtown Connector, Spaghetti Junction, and I‑20/I‑285 loops can involve fast merges and quick lane changes. Staying in the middle lanes until your exit approaches keeps the experience more relaxed, especially if you're new to the area.
