Things to do in Detroit

Midtown’s galleries and theaters create a lively arts corridor, and the riverfront offers calm spaces with wide water views. With a rental car, it feels easy to move from one area to the next, whether you are visiting the Motown Museum on West Grand Boulevard or spending time in Corktown’s blend of historic storefronts and new development. Each district has its own personality, and driving helps you experience more of them without rushing.

The Detroit Institute of Arts anchors Midtown with galleries that move from ancient civilizations to modern works that feel deeply connected to the city’s own story. The surrounding district is filled with theaters, small cultural spaces, and leafy streets that invite slow exploring. A rental car makes it easy to connect Midtown with nearby New Center or the broader Museum District without relying on Detroit’s limited rail network.

On West Grand Boulevard, the Motown Museum preserves the rooms where some of America’s most influential music took shape. Standing inside the original Studio A feels like stepping behind the curtain of a creative era that still shapes the city’s identity. Driving lets you easily pair this stop with a visit to Eastern Market, Corktown, or other neighborhoods that sit along Detroit’s wide‑spanning corridors.

Detroit’s riverfront stretches out with walking paths, parks, and open spaces that offer calm views of the water. A short drive brings you onto Belle Isle, a state park with beaches, historic buildings, and quiet corners where the breeze off the river feels especially refreshing. With a car, you can explore different sections of the riverfront and continue to other neighborhoods without doubling back.

Corktown blends classic brick storefronts and long‑standing restaurants with new projects surrounding the restored Michigan Central building. It is a neighborhood that feels both historic and forward‑looking. With a car, you can wander Corktown, then reach nearby areas like Mexicantown, Campus Martius, or the entertainment district in minutes.

Greektown stays lively from morning through late night with restaurants, nightlife, and entertainment venues that make the area easy to pair with a game or event. Ford Field, Comerica Park, and the arenas across The District Detroit sit just a short drive away, and a rental car helps you move between venues and nearby neighborhoods without relying on tight event schedules.

Just west of Detroit, The Henry Ford Museum of American Innovation showcases artifacts that shaped American life, from the Rosa Parks bus to early aviation breakthroughs. It is part of the wider campus known as The Henry Ford, which includes Greenfield Village and the Ford Rouge Factory Tour. The short drive from downtown or DTW makes this major attraction easy to reach and explore.

Travel Tips for Driving in Detroit

Michigan’s statutory speed limits include 25 mph in residential and business districts unless posted otherwise. Statewide limits also include 55 mph on trunkline and county highways without specific signs and up to 70 mph on limited access freeways. Michigan’s basic speed law requires drivers to adjust speed for traffic, weather, and road conditions as needed.

Detroit manages more than 2,200 metered spaces, and payment is available through ParkDetroit or standard meters. Meter enforcement runs Monday through Saturday, with Sundays free except for safety violations. Residential Parking Zones have expanded near high‑demand neighborhoods and require permits when posted.

Peak traffic usually occurs 6:00 to 10:00 a.m. and 3:00 to 7:00 p.m., with the highest morning volume around 7 a.m. and the slowest evening conditions between 4 and 5 p.m. Major slowdowns frequently occur on I 75, I 94, and I 696, especially near interchanges serving commuter traffic.

Detroit Metropolitan Airport is roughly 21 miles from downtown via I 94. Typical drive times range from 25 to 35 minutes depending on traffic.

Enterprise allows most rental cars to be driven into Canada, including trips from Detroit to Windsor and beyond, if renters carry a valid driver’s license, the rental agreement, and any border documents required by Canadian authorities. Renters should contact the pickup branch to confirm cross‑border eligibility for their specific vehicle class.

Drivers crossing via the Ambassador Bridge or the Detroit–Windsor Tunnel will encounter tolls, with rates varying by facility and payment method. Canada does not require U.S. drivers to purchase temporary insurance at the border, but renters must rely on the coverage selected through Enterprise or their approved insurance provider.

Events at Ford Field, Comerica Park, and Little Caesars Arena cause heavy congestion throughout The District Detroit. Reserving parking in advance or arriving early can help avoid delays.

Greektown offers free shuttle service to select events, including Red Wings home games, providing an alternative to parking near venues.

Detroit winters bring light snow, freezing rain, and occasional squalls that can reduce visibility and create slick roads. Minor snow events often bring one to two inches of accumulation. Drivers should clear windows fully, slow down, leave extra stopping distance, and stay alert when winds or sudden bursts of snow create quick changes in road conditions. Michigan’s basic speed law requires drivers to always adjust speed for weather and roadway hazards.
