Houston offers a lively mix of culture, history, and outdoor adventures. With a rental car, you can easily move between Downtown, the Museum District, and the Bay Area to make the most of your time.

The official visitor center for NASA’s Johnson Space Center features hands‑on exhibits, tram tours, and artifacts from human spaceflight. Located southeast of the city in Clear Lake, it is a straightforward drive via I‑45 with on‑site parking.

One of the largest art museums in the country, the MFAH showcases a diverse collection spanning more than 5,000 years, plus rotating exhibitions and the Cullen Sculpture Garden. It sits in the Museum District next to Hermann Park with convenient garage parking nearby.

This 160‑acre urban green space runs along Buffalo Bayou and features walking paths, bike trails, skyline views, and unique public art. Access is easy via Allen Parkway and Memorial Drive, with trailheads and parking lots at select points along the park.

Explore everything from ancient fossils and dazzling gems to the Burke Baker Planetarium and the Cockrell Butterfly Center. Located in the Museum District, the museum is family‑friendly and offers nearby garage and surface lot parking.

Home to the Houston Astros and a variety of lively events, this downtown stadium is a favorite for game day. Stadium tours offer a behind‑the‑scenes look, and multiple garages and lots are within a short walk of the ballpark.

Located in Hermann Park in the Museum District, the zoo features thousands of animals, interactive exhibits, and shaded pathways that are great for families. It is easy to pair with nearby museums, and paid parking is available in adjacent garages and lots. Arriving early helps with crowds, especially on weekends.

Travel Tips for Driving in Housotn

Yes. You will encounter facilities like the Sam Houston Tollway, Hardy Toll Road, Westpark Tollway, Grand Parkway and managed lanes on I‑10 and SH 288. Most are electronic only, so have an interoperable toll tag such as EZ TAG, TxTag or NTTA TollTag. Some ramps and segments are tag‑only, and plate billing is limited in places, so it is best to request a vehicle with a toll transponder at pickup.

Houston’s HOV and HOT lanes are barrier‑separated and often reversible. Hours, occupancy rules and tolls vary by corridor. Single‑occupant vehicles typically need a valid toll tag and pay a variable toll when the lanes are open, while vehicles with 2 or more occupants may qualify for HOV access during posted hours. I‑10 Katy Managed Lanes use dynamic pricing and still require a tag even during HOV hours. Check the METRO HOV/HOT guidelines before you go.

Texas sets default limits of 30 mph on urban streets and 70 mph on numbered highways outside urban districts unless signs state otherwise. Always follow posted limits and adjust for rain or heavy traffic as advised by TxDOT.

For on‑street parking, use the ParkHouston app to pay by license plate. Time limits are posted by block, meters are not enforced on official City holidays, and paying at the meter or in the app is the recommended method. For longer visits, choose a garage or lot using Downtown Houston’s parking map. Never give cash to anyone on the street for parking.

Houston drivers often refer to frontage roads as feeders. These one‑way roads run alongside freeways and include signed turnarounds known as Texas U‑turns. Expect closely spaced on and off ramps, and yield appropriately when merging from ramps onto frontage roads.

Houston can flood quickly. Never drive through high water. As the National Weather Service says, Turn Around, Don’t Drown. Use the Houston TranStar traffic map or mobile app to check for high‑water closures and conditions, and follow local barricades and guidance.
