Things to do in Santa Monica

Santa Monica combines beachfront attractions, shopping districts, bike paths, and oceanfront scenery along the western edge of Los Angeles. Visitors can explore the pier and downtown areas before heading toward the beach, coastal trails, and nearby neighborhoods stretching along the Pacific Coast.

The Santa Monica Pier is one of Southern California’s best-known waterfront attractions with an amusement park, arcade games, restaurants, and views over the Pacific Ocean. Pacific Park’s Ferris wheel and roller coaster sit directly above the beach and become especially busy during weekends and summer evenings. The pier also marks the traditional western endpoint of Route 66.

Third Street Promenade is a pedestrian shopping district lined with retail stores, restaurants, street performers, and outdoor dining areas in downtown Santa Monica. The area stays active throughout the day and into the evening with visitors moving between nearby hotels, theaters, and the beach. Holiday weekends and summer tourism season usually bring the largest crowds.

Santa Monica State Beach stretches along a wide section of coastline with volleyball courts, walking areas, and access to the Marvin Braude Bike Trail. Visitors use the paved beachfront path for biking, jogging, roller skating, and walking between Santa Monica, Venice Beach, and neighboring coastal areas. Warmer weekends often bring heavy beach traffic and crowded bike paths.

The Santa Monica Farmers Market draws vendors and shoppers from across Los Angeles with produce stands, prepared foods, flowers, and local goods spread across several weekly markets. Some of the city’s restaurants and chefs regularly source ingredients from the market. Morning hours usually bring the heaviest activity around downtown streets near the event areas.

The Annenberg Community Beach House combines public beach access with a pool, splash areas, playgrounds, and oceanfront gathering spaces north of the pier. The property sits on the former estate site of publishing executive William Randolph Hearst. Families often visit during warmer months because of the mix of beach and recreational amenities.

Bergamot Station houses galleries, studios, and exhibition spaces inside a converted industrial property east of downtown Santa Monica. Visitors can walk between contemporary art galleries and rotating exhibits throughout the complex. The area attracts a quieter crowd compared to the beach and downtown districts closer to the ocean.

Santa Monica sits about 8 to 10 miles north of Los Angeles International Airport depending on the route and destination within the city. Drive times can range from roughly 20 minutes to more than an hour based on traffic conditions. Congestion near LAX and along Interstate 10 often creates the biggest delays.

Santa Monica is relatively easy to navigate because of its grid layout and major coastal roads, though traffic can become heavy near downtown and the beach. Many visitors drive between neighborhoods but switch to walking once they reach areas like the pier or Third Street Promenade. Parking garages and public lots are spread throughout the city center.

Traffic in Santa Monica is busiest during weekday rush hours, summer weekends, and sunset periods near the beach. Interstate 10 and Pacific Coast Highway often slow down significantly during peak travel times. Visitors heading toward the coast should usually expect slower travel speeds than distance alone might suggest.

Downtown Santa Monica and the areas around Third Street Promenade offer the city’s largest concentration of restaurants, bars, and nightlife. Main Street near the southern end of the city has a more local atmosphere with smaller restaurants and cafés closer to the beach. Ocean Avenue stays busy with hotels, rooftop dining, and waterfront views.

Venice Beach sits immediately south of Santa Monica and is usually less than a 15 minute drive away outside heavy traffic. Beverly Hills is typically around 30 to 45 minutes inland, while downtown Los Angeles often takes 45 minutes or longer depending on congestion. Travel times across Los Angeles can vary widely throughout the day.

Beach parking fills quickly during warm weekends and holiday periods, especially near the pier and popular oceanfront entrances. Public garages and lots are available, but prices and availability vary throughout the day. Arriving earlier in the morning usually makes parking much easier during peak beach season.
